MAYOR
MARKS START ON NEW LACE MARKET SQUARE,
November 2005
The Right Worshipful the Lord Mayor
of Nottingham, Councillor Mohammed Munir,
has marked the start construction on
Nottingham's latest prestige development,
Lace Market Square.
This £10+m
contemporary scheme, designed by architects
Franklin Ellis, comprises 46 high-quality
apartments, retail space and secure
underground parking.
At the centre of
the scheme, by local developer Bildurn,
is an 11,000 sq ft public square designed
by Nottingham-based art and landscape
design company Wolfgang and Heron.
Nottingham City Council is particularly
supportive of this new urban public
square, which will be at the heart
of the Lace Market.
The scheme, being
built by Marriott Construction, is
due to be completed in January 2007.
Peter Hawes, Director
of Marriott Construction, hosted the
groundbreaking event on site, and
commented. "This is a very exciting
and prestigious project and we are
delighted that it has now reached
the stage where building work can
start."
The scheme's architects,
Franklin Ellis, are well known for
their work on, amongst others, the
Paul Smith shop in Nottingham and
retail and residential developments
at Castlewharf, Stoney Street and
Sneinton Market.
Architect David
Franklin commented: "The development
will create a much needed public space
within the Lace Market. The building
seeks to provide a balance between
respect for the history of the location
whilst reflecting a modern, forward-thinking
ethos."
Marketing for the
residential part of the development
is being handled by Savills who has
already secured sales on a number
of the 46 apartments, which are competitively
priced from £125,000, since
release in October.
Gail Richardson,
Head of New Homes at Savills, commented:
"There was a substantial amount
of interest in the apartments as soon
as we started marketing - despite
the degree of competition. This development
is quite unique as it is both right
in the centre of the Lace Market and
overlooking what we expect will be
a stunning continental piazza."
