ARCHITECTURE
WEEK PROVIDES A CHANCE TO MEET THE
CREATIVE TEAM BEHIND LACE MARKET SQUARE,
June 2006
"Through
the Looking Glass - Natural Themes
in Urban Art"
Nottingham's art and landscape design
team Wolfgang and Heron are opening
their studio to the public for the
first time on Saturday June 17 as
part of Architecture Week.
Wolfgang and Heron (for local developer
Bildurn Properties) are designing
the 11,000 sq ft Lace Market Square.
The inspirational new public plaza
will be completed in spring next year
and will be the Lace Market's first
modern open space. The commission
is supported by an Arts & Business
Partnership Grant.
The Square will feature stainless
steel and bronze sculptural trees
together with real trees and granite
terraces, formally clipped beech and
box hedges, and individually-designed
oak seating.
At the FREE open day and exhibition,
at the studio in the Lace Market,
Wolfgang and Heron will show how environmental
themes feed into their public art
and landscape commissions. They will
be able to show samples of the materials
being used at Lace Market Square together
with those for their other current
projects. This event has been supported
by East Midlands Architecture Week
enhancement fund.
The award-winning team of Wolfgang
Buttress and Fiona Heron (who won
The Lord Mayor's Award for Urban Design
for the Park Rock landscape on Castle
Boulevard) are well known for the
innovative and contemporary designs
- they created the revolving sculpture
that stands in front of the National
Ice Centre and the forthcoming 12
metre feather "A Spire for Mansfield".
Fiona Heron said: "Our approach
is not to bolt art onto the landscape
but to take an overall creative approach
to the setting right from the outset.
This Open Event, as part of Architecture
Week gives the general public a chance
look at the inspiration behind our
art and landscape projects through
sketches, photography and models.
It also gives us a chance to share
our ideas and thoughts about sculptural
works in an urban setting and the
planning process that goes into our
work."
The studio is open on Saturday 17
June 10am-4pm: Wolfgang and Heron
Studio, First Floor, 30 Woolpack Lane,

The quality of design of our buildings

of everyone in the community. In this
10th anniversary the programme of
events in the East Midlands promises
to be one of the most varied ever

in order to appreciate just how important
creativity, architecture and design
