POD
PUSHES AHEAD NEW SCHEME SPRINGS
INTO LIFE, Nov 2006

Since the
main reinforced concrete frame
was erected, Fletcher Gate in
Nottingham has seen the emergence
of any exciting new development
that promises to lead the way
for contemporary architecture
in the city.
In November,
the last significant concrete
pour of the £25m retail
and leisure scheme The Pod,
marked a major milestone for
this innovative project.
The Pod is
a 108,000 sq ft seven storey
development that will comprise
two or three levels of extensive
retail units aimed at larger
space users plus a 141-room
hotel on the upper floors, and
a roof top bar / restaurant,
Sky Bar.
The innovative
scheme was designed by award-winning
London architects Benson+Forsyth
who won a £150,000 competition,
hosted by local developer Bildurn,
to create The Pod. Benson+Forsyth
are best known for designing
the spectacular Museum of Scotland,
close to a UNESCO World Heritage
Site in Edinburgh's old town.
This Pod is
a landmark scheme and is being
heralded as setting new standards
for innovative, quality architecture
in Nottingham and has been recognised
by Nottingham City Council as
part of their Design 06 campaign
to promote and encourage high
standards of design.
Nigel Turpin,
Team Leader, Urban Design at
Nottingham City Council commented;
"The Pod is a good example
of how design competitions can
bring excellent architectural
design to Nottingham. This is
something that we are encouraging
through Design 06, to give the
city a distinctive edge in all
aspects of the built environment."
The construction
team at Laing O'Rourke began
on site in October last year
and completion is expected summer
2007.
The Pod provides
a central focus in one of the
most sought-after parts of Nottingham,
linking Nottingham's historic
Lace Market, the Bridlesmith
Gate fashion district and the
new retail units at One Fletcher
Gate.
Sean Akins
from Bildurn added, "It
is really excited to see Benson+
Forsyth's creation come to life
which will create a new retail
hub for the Lace Market."
